For new residents and visitors to Illinois there are a few traffic laws that may or may not be similar to those of your home state. A few of them are outlined here. Right Turn on Red - In Illinois it is lawful to make a right turn on a red traffic light (625 ILCS 5/11-306) provided : 1. There are no signs on the traffic standard prohibiting the right turn. 2. The driver of the vehicle comes to a complete stop prior to turning 3. It is safe to make the turn without interferring with cross traffic or any pedestrians Headlights Required - You are required to turn on your headlights when driving in rain, snow or fog (625 ILCS 5/12-201). Motorcycles - Illinois does not require drivers or passengers of motorcycles to wear a helmet. You and your passenger are required to wear eye protection. (625 ILCS 11-1404) Seat Belts - Seat belts are required to be worn by the driver and front seat passengers of a motor vehicle (625 ILCS 5/12-603.1). Child Safety Seats - Any driver transporting a child is responsible of ensuring that a child restraint system is used by the child (625 ILCS 25/3). Depending on the child's age, the following regulations apply: 1. Under 4 years of age- Child car seat must be used. 2. Between 4 and 6 - Either a child restraint system (car seat) or seat belts. 3. Over 6 but under 18- Must wear seat belt (regardless if in front or rear seat) Proof of Insurance Required- No motor vehicle may be operated in Illinois unless covered by a liability insurance policy. Drivers who fail to comply with a request by a law enforcement officer for display of evidence of insurance shall be deemed to be operating an unisured motor vehicle. (625 ILCS 5/3-707) Driving Under the Influence - Illinois is tough on drunk drivers. Operators of a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 or above is guilty of Driving Under the Influence (DUI). In addition, Illinois is a Zero Tolerance state for drivers under 21. Any driver under the age of 21 having any alcohol in his/her system (above 0.0), is guilty of DUI. IF YOU ARE GOING TO DRINK, DON'T DRIVE !!
